Stephen Stow Stout
Toasted Coconut Vanilla Stout
6.8% ABV
On an indescribably cold and dark December night in 1776, over 200 prisoners of war were left on the Milford shores by a British ship enroute to New London. The prisoners were abandoned because they had ship fever and small pox.
Despite knowing that it could cost him his own life, Captain Stephen Stow attempted to nurse them back to health. Legend has it that being as Yeti’s were not yet invented, the fearless Captain filled the largest container he could find, a ships locker made of oak, with his favorite dark ale, some toasted coconut, and Madagascar vanilla beans (because of their curative powers) and brought it to the makeshift hospital to provide sustenance for the sick.
Eventually 46 of the men and the captain himself succumbed to small pox, but the concoction helped to heal over 150 of the sick. While no one can prove that this story is 100% true, no one can prove that it isn’t. The Captain Triple S pays homage to our fearless forefather, and the magical potion he devised… or didn’t.
While the story above is semi-fictional, Captain Stephen Stow was a real Milford hero. You can learn more about him here. You can also see the monument marker at Gulf Beach where the prisoners were dropped off and visit the monument to Captain Stow in Milford Cemetery.
*Denotes that the FDA has not approved the fact that Madagascar Vanilla beans have curative powers. That may be semi-fictional as well.
